I watch Scarlett hold the bastard’s hand, and I know I’ve lost her. I know that, the second she felt any sympathy for him, she wouldn’t ever forgive me for what I’d done. She’ll want to leave as soon as I tell her it’s okay. I’ll never see her again.

I try not to think about that yet. I still have a job to finish. And, until it’s over, I can’t deal with her.

Santino continues to drive without speaking to any of us. He doesn’t even so much as glance in his rearview mirror. Not after he found out that I had told Scarlett what Marcel really was. He probably thinks I messed up by showing her too much. And that this isn’t really a test to see if she is cut out for this life since she thinks he isn’t innocent. He’s right, of course. But I don’t think she will be okay even with killing someone she thinks should die.

Scarlett doesn’t look at me after Marcel is gone. She holds his hand for a moment longer and then lets go. She spends the rest of the drive staring out the window. I’m surprised she didn’t throw up. Or cry. Or do something when she watched him die. I guess she was in shock. She probably still is, and that’s why she hasn’t done any of those things yet.

Santino pulls up to a car and parks right next to it, just like we planned. He hops out of the car and scans to see if anyone is watching us. I climb out of the car. I don’t bother telling Scarlett what we are doing. She will figure it out soon enough.

Santino nods at me, signaling that the coast is clear. I dig through Marcel’s pockets and find his car keys to his red Toyota Prius. I unlock the car, and Santino opens the door. I scoop Marcel up under his arms and drag his lifeless body out of the back of my Mercedes. I try to be careful not to damage his body in any way that might give away that someone else was involved. Not that it really matters. The police aren’t going to catch us. Not for this.

His feet make a thud when I pull him out of the car.

Santino winces at the sound and then glares at me. “Careful with his body, man.”

I roll my eyes. I’ve killed hundreds of times before. I know how not to get caught. We aren’t going to get caught for killing a pedophile. Not after the police find out what he is.

Santino helps me get Marcel’s body into the front seat of his car. I put the car key in the ignition and the syringe on his lap. From my pocket, I pull out the photos of him and the boys, and I scatter them in the front seat of the car, like he was looking at them when he shot up. The police will think it was an overdose, and after they see the pictures, they won’t do any more investigation into how he died.
